New mom stuff

Jook in the eye

Preserved egg & shredded meat jook, or rice porridge, is my favorite kind of jook. That black stuff? Preserved egg. It’s dense, the yolk is creamy & oh-so-good.

Today, in my exuberance, launched a bit of jook in my right eye.

It really got you, didn’t it Mom?

Never before, in all my jook eating days, has it ever gotten in my eye.

I suppose weird stuff like this happens a lot around kids. This time it has nothing to do with baby… Or did it?

I was rushing my meal so I could tend to more baby-related tasks.

Once a friend’s kid launched a suction cup dart into my eye and I was so mad! It hurt! But there would no payback, no siree. Kids get away with so much.

Another time, at a Korean BBQ place in Honolulu, a bit of sizzling oil from center grill jumped up and again, into my eye. I rushed to the bathroom & thought I might have lost an eye to KBBQ. Alas, no eye was hurt. But it was blurry for a while. Scary.

My baby will inevitably need glasses. I wore glasses since third grade, contacts in middle school & finally later, lazer corrective surgery after law school to fix these puppies.

Another close call today. Totally dodged that jook bullet. Well, didn’t quite dodge it; it just didn’t do any permanent damage. Phew!
