Noms

Mom, you eat weird things

Baby will be starting solids soon. Well, maybe the category is more “mushy.”

Today at home, I was enjoying my baby’s smiles & laughs. There was a lot of this.

He woke up all cheery & was basically rooting for the home team (Go Giants!); he was so enthusiastic.

He tolerated my photos and even understood as I took pictures of his grandmother’s pig’s feet dishes.

Yes, dishes. I ate pig’s feet two ways for lunch.

First, was the black vinegar & ginger staple. Every culture has their breastfeeding specialty dishes & this is mine.

I love it.

The next version was cooked in what seems like should be a vegetarian dish with mushrooms & other non-meat items but the feet really throw it into carnivore universe.

Tofu skin & bone marrow is good.

Later after baby had a bath & mom had a productive afternoon of bill paying, a special yogurt snack was in order.

This plain Beijing yogurt is light and reminiscent of the “sour milk” or yogurt I had daily in China. (The Chinese language is very literal.)

I like to top mine with nuts for an extra protein punch. HB likes his honey flavored but I do sugar free so I can justify a sweet treat perhaps later.

Did you know the recommended amount of sugar for a woman is 20 grams per day?

A can of soda can have 40 grams of sugar.

(Men can have 36 grams of sugar per day & children 12 grams, per the American Heart Association.)

That means no one should be downing a full can of soda! Maybe you can have half and save the rest for later! Ridiculous.

I’m particularly sensitive to the topic because:

  1. I had gestational diabetes with baby & would like to make mindful lifetime choices to live a really long time.
  2. I love sugar.

Life ain’t easy. My parents didn’t let me drink soda as a kid & that helps a lot.

Sorry baby, you won’t be getting soda except maybe on your birthday (enjoy a few sips, honey).
