For now. Eggsy is newly nine months & thoughts of preschool are looming overhead. We attended a preschool preview night & here’s what I learned:
- Preschool applications are a somewhat competitive process.
- The child’s fit for the school is probably one of the biggest factors in admission.
- Recommended to apply for 3-4 schools (with upwards of 8 schools) & to tour 10-20 before applying.
- Location & managability of program (part versus full time) should be key factors for parents in their selection.
- Start looking a year ahead for when you want your little in a program.
- Rolling admission, wait list or wait pools matter. Get on the lists of the places you care about & enjoy the luxury of getting the kid’s name in a pool sooner or later (since timeliness of application does not affect odds of admission).
- Many programs cut off at a certain age. 2 & a half or so is like the hip age to start preschool.
- Applying means touring the school, having a play date with the director &/or teachers & submitting a formal application (with fee). It’s a long process.
- All the seriousness about preschool is slightly laughable.
I am not entirely convinced that children need preschool to thrive. I am interested in Eggsy’s options, however. Here’s to taking the next steps towards getting him into Stanford!
