The struggle is real

Kid has been sick for two weeks now. Quarantined. All his adults got sick too.  Finally things are looking up. Basically all our plans have been foiled.  That is okay.  I’m trying to be cool. Making any appointment takes superior effort. Good thing my friends & family are understanding.  The little monkey is attached at the hip (my hip). New surroundings require adjustment (understandably).  New kindness & gentleness, especially for parents, because this is challenging,…

Water is life

Tonight’s reintroduction back into yoga life was amid the Phillipine coral reef. Nightlife at Cal Academy breathed new life into me.  Initially, motherhood wore me down. Exhausted & out of the fitness loop, I felt drained.  Now? Well, now I feel stronger than ever. I’ve always been a do all or do practically nothing type. Don’t know what this says about my personality. There is a time to rest & a time to rise.  Turns…

The way I feel about you

It’s really a reflection of how I feel about me. Not to be egotistical but it’s true.  Been pensive about some relationships and the boundaries in them. I’m trying to be in a place to treat others, especially loved ones, in a way that is respectful, loving, compassionate, yet mindful of healthy boundaries that is caring of me too. This takes work.  Compassion towards others is easier & care for self is harder. It’s easy…

The big deal

Mighty Mui mui

Smity came & gone. She is like the sun; we gratefully revolve around her.  In her brilliance, we played, ate & spent time with family & friends. It’s a rare thing, all 3 siblings together. Always laughing. We have the same kind of sense of humor, cemented in Simpsons references & (what we consider) clever puns.   I really adore her. She’s quite spectacular. Somewhere along the way, she became this incredible force. Strong, beautiful, witty…

Sweet 16

A touch late but baby is 16 months now. Incredible.  He is active as ever. Not quite responsive to instruction yet. He gleefully explores & plays. His energy is contagious. This time is fun yet exhausting. This phase is challenging. We are worn out.  Then he smiles at us & we melt.    Sundaes are really for the grown ups. He dove in & got a face full of whipped cream. Like MF said: every food…

The business of being small

Minced pork with salty egg fit for those with limited teeth.  There is a restaurant called Lychee Cafe that my family used to like to go to. Chinese food. Homely. They’ve moved into a bigger space & have lost some of their following.  I like them still. One night I picked up take out & chatted with the owner, a nice, older woman who is small but is the kind of person who gets things…

Spring has sprung

Yesterday I watched my niece’s eyes flutter in the rearview mirror as she fought a late afternoon nap. Turns out that even for half-decade olds, the familiar flutter of eyelashes before sleep is the same as if she were still a little old.  Mine fights sleep all the time. In fact he has just succumbed to a nap now. Having recovered from a 24 hour fever, he is more attached to me than ever.  I…

The perks of being a wallmother

Praying for strength as many are facing challenging times.  Turns out, there are perks to being a wallflower. Or a mother.  In a conversation with little sis, I realize the mild concern over the lack of development without gainful employment is not necessary. There is growth, learning & progress as a mother.  Baby teaches me all kinds of things. Most of all, he gives me hope. Perhaps that is why the nursery for plant life…

Edibles

Take out from Tazaki Sushi, our replacement for our beloved Yum Yum. They have a packed house on a Wednesday. The food is good but it’s not Yum Yum. My heart sinks for the long standing sushi restaurant, now closed.    Baby hasn’t quite perfected the art of pizza eating yet. At Pizza My Heart, the kid has toppings & crust but not much pie. We’ll work on it.    We finally try Pokeatery in San…

Pass it on

Struggling a little bit lately. I’ve heard of terrible twos but it should really be called terrible ones! Baby is excitedly running about now. In his wake, is everything he can get his little hands on. A few hours is fun; 24/7 is daunting.  Yesterday morning he pooped, peed on the floor then pooped again. That’s a solid morning.  Grateful for my mom who gives me a break. Thankful for supportive family & friends. My…
